Charges filed against bus company in FSU hazing

For the past several months, investigations into the death of a Florida A&M band member have been ongoing. According to reports, Robert Champion was the victim of brutal hazing rituals at the hands of his fellow band members. He suffered traumatic blows to his head and severe bleeding. Information continues to become available in his wrongful death.

Previously, no charges had been filed, and the band director was placed on administrative leave after the tragic accident. Various claims say that a group of students beat the young man and the band director knew about the hazing, but did not act to stop it.

Judgment: $2.3 million dollars awarded to slip-and-fall victim

Negligence in a store is bad enough without property owners trying to cover up the negligence after a serious accident. A judge recently served up a substantial punishment to grocery store owners who were ruled to be responsible for injuries suffered by one of their customers. Florida residents may not be familiar with the grocery store chain involved, but it is important to keep in mind that the slippery situation could have happened at any retail store.

During a routine trip to a Kroger grocery store, a 49-year-old man was shopping when he slipped on some crushed fruit on the floor. He fell and suffered serious damage to his spinal cord. These types of injuries typically have enormous consequences on a person's lifestyle. The man had previously worked in the landscaping industry and could no longer work. Understandably, the man filed a suit against the grocery store.

Driver causes serious injury to motorcyclists on Florida roadway

An investigation into an incident on a Florida roadway known for its high crash rate is still ongoing after a serious motorcycle accident took place. A 42-year-old man caused an accident which sent two motorcycle riders to the hospital with injuries, and then fled the scene.

The man was not paying attention when he pulled out of a gas station right in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle hit the man's Kia sedan in the driver-side door and the impact sent the two bikers flying off the bike. The two riders - a man who was driving and his female passenger - were taken to Bayonet Point Hospital. Both were in critical condition.

Florida no-fault law may be changing soon

Under Florida law, all drivers are required to carry personal injury protection coverage up to $10,000. Florida has a no-fault law, which allows drivers to receive payment from their own insurance company after a car accident. This money is given to victims, regardless of fault, and is to be used for medical bills.

While the law has both fans and critics, it may be changing in the near future. A number of state lawmakers are introducing reformations to the current law that they believe will reduce cases of fraud and abuse.

Wrongful death case settled for $2.6 million

A $2.6 million settlement was recently approved by Tallahassee city commissioners following the wrongful death suit filed by a young woman's parents. The woman was a police informant who was fatally shot during a drug sting in 2008. Following her death, the 23-year-old woman's parents sued, citing police negligence.

The young woman had agreed to act as a police informant after she was caught with illegal drugs. As an informant, she was to go and purchase drugs and a gun in a drug sting. According to police records, she was sent alone with $13,000 in marked bills to purchase the drugs. During the drug deal, the police lost track of where she was and failed to maintain contact with her. The man who was selling to her fatally shot the victim five times. He then stole her vehicle, the marked money and a credit card.

Flimsy footwear no match for defective walkway

Residents all across Florida frequently visit nail salons for manicures and pedicures. As many patrons know, salons sometimes provide paper footwear to use after a pedicure. However, the inadequate paper shoes combined with an unsafe walkway could combine to result in a slip and fall, injuring a customer.

Recently, a woman was visiting a salon for a pedicure. After she was finished with the service, she attempted to put her shoes back on. However, an employee of the salon said she was not allowed to put her own shoes on and then supplied her with a pair of thin flip flops.

Government to pay family $17.8 million after fatal aviation accident

In 2008, a fatal airplane accident involving a Marine Corps fighter jet claimed the lives of four innocent people in San Diego. After a series of mistakes, the jet crashed into the family's home, killing four family members, including two children who were only 2 months and 15 months old, along with their mother and grandmother.

According to reports, mechanical failure, along with pilot error led the student airman to crash into the home. After the fatal aviation accident, 13 members of the Navy and Marine Corps were disciplined for their errors, and the federal government admitted liability. Tragically, the crash could have been avoided if the airman had taken the opportunity to land at a nearby Navy base.

Details sparse in Florida fatal motorcycle accident

Being involved in an accident of any kind can be quite scary. When someone is involved in a motorcycle accident, however, injuries can be more serious and may be fatal. Motorcycle riders are some of the most vulnerable motorists because of the lack of protection they have in an accident.

A Seminole County officer was recently the victim of a fatal motorcycle accident. He was on duty when he was riding his motorcycle. According to reports, he crashed into the passenger side of a car that was turning left directly in front of him.

Distracted driver ordered to pay $8.8 million to Florida victims

Recent recommendations have been made by the National Transportation Safety Board that states across the country ban cell phone use while driving. Currently, Florida has no such law in effect. However, this lack of regulation is being challenged after a number of distracted drivers have caused serious accidents. One driver was allegedly texting and driving recklessly when he caused a fatal car accident in 2008.

The young man responsible for the accident was reportedly speeding and weaving through lanes when he crashed into another vehicle. One of the passengers in the other car died and the other suffered serious injuries in the crash.

Negligence and pilot error at fault for fatal Florida crash

The National Transportation Safety Board has determined that a 2007 plane crash in Florida was due to a combination of pilot error and the negligence of an air traffic controller. The accident resulted in the fatality of the pilot, a Florida businessman. His family was recently awarded $4.4 million in damages.

The man was flying his small plane from Boca Raton to South Carolina. He had not flown in over four months, but he received his pilot's license in 1982. During the course of his flight, he unknowingly flew too close to an area of adverse weather conditions. In the midst of the severe thunderstorm, he lost control of his plane.
