Being involved in an accident of any kind can be quite scary. When someone is involved in a motorcycle accident, however, injuries can be more serious and may be fatal. Motorcycle riders are some of the most vulnerable motorists because of the lack of protection they have in an accident.

A Seminole County officer was recently the victim of a fatal motorcycle accident. He was on duty when he was riding his motorcycle. According to reports, he crashed into the passenger side of a car that was turning left directly in front of him.

Currently, Florida state laws do not require riders to wear motorcycle helmets if they are at least 21-years-old, but the officer was wearing a helmet. Sadly, the officer died and the driver of the car has been hospitalized and is in critical condition. Charges against the driver are pending.

Details about the driver of the car and any possible traffic violations have not been released. Was the driver making an illegal turn? Was he or she distracted and neglect to properly signal the turn? Were other dangerous factors involved? It will be interesting to see what factors may have led to the accident. If the driver was negligent, he or she may be required to compensate the officer's family for his wrongful death.

Some victims of motorcycle accidents may suffer serious, life-changing injuries. Brain or spinal cord damage, paralysis or broken bones are not uncommon. Under Florida state law, a person cannot get personal injury protection for a motorcycle. Those who are injured in a motorcycle accident may want to consult an experienced lawyer who can work to obtain compensation for any medical bills and lost wages, if appropriate.
